There's a buzz going on in the natural hair community and blogs about a club promoter by the name of Joey Digital who is offering discounts to women with natural hair for the Atlanta Classic and FAMU Homecoming Events that he is promoting. He is offering discounts for them because he essentially has a disdain for weaves and a love of natural hair.
While I do find it commendable that he is a man who appreciates a woman who rocks her natural hair and beauty, but in the same token, I have to wonder why is this really necessary?? I understand admiration for women with natural hair, however, couldn't this be viewed as another way to cause division among us? I would argue that how is this act any different than 3 or 4 years ago when there promoters using fliers to advertise for light-skin parties and dark-skin parties, where one night those who were light-skin got in free and the next nite or following week or so people with dark-skin got in free.(there were actual fliers for this party you can look them up on google) Although, skin color has nothing to do with this issue, I'm making a point to say that all this really does, even though it has good intentions, is cause division among us as African-Americans and as women. Furthermore, I think because the promoter is male, he might not understand or be aware that a woman can still be natural and wear a weave. She might be wearing the weave as a protective style to fully transition to a natural state or she might simply just want a change in her look. I would also wonder where does that leave women who still relax their hair but don't wear a weave, do they still qualify for the discount?? As I stated before, this not an attack on Joey, I just feel like although he may have had good intentions behind his actions, sometimes one has to consider the outcome (positive or negative) of actions where it appears that one group is favored more than the other.
